Exploring the science behind gut health

by Amber Fairweather |

If you're part of the Symbiota community, you will be familiar with the concept of fermented foods and their potential health benefits. But as research continues to advance, the importance of probiotics for gut health and overall wellbeing is becoming increasingly clear.

Here is a closer look at some of the latest research on gut health and probiotics from the past three years.

Journal of Food Science and Technology - 2022

A 2022 study published in the Journal of Food Science and Technology investigated the effects of fermented soybean paste on gut microbiota and metabolic markers in overweight and obese adults. The study found that fermented soybean paste improved gut microbiota diversity, reduced inflammation, and improved metabolic parameters.

Nutrients - 2021

A study published in the journal Nutrients in 2021 found that a 12-week consumption of fermented milk (kefir) improved gut microbiota composition and decreased inflammation in adults with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).

Frontiers in Microbiology - 2023

A 2023 study published in the journal Frontiers in Microbiology evaluated the effects of probiotics on gut microbiota and immune function in athletes. The study found that a multi-strain probiotic supplement increased beneficial gut bacteria and improved immune function in athletes.

Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry - 2021

Another study published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry in 2021 evaluated the effects of fermented dairy products on gut microbiota and inflammatory markers in healthy adults. The study found that fermented dairy products, such as yogurt and cheese, increased beneficial gut bacteria and decreased markers of inflammation.

There are many, many more studies that are giving proof to what we already know - that the ingestion of probiotics and prebiotics have a massive range of benefits to our health including improvements in gut microbe and digestive issues, more mental clarity, and improved immune function.
Understanding your own gut health and requirements is an important start in your journey to healing your microbiome.
