Despite the popularity of golden milk, it is not a recent invention. This comforting tonic, dates back thousands of years and is a traditional medicine in India.
To enhance its nutritional value, we have made it with fermented milk kefir, instead of plain milk.
Ingredients:
- 750ml of fermented milk kefir
- 1 tablespoon of honey
- 1 tablespoon of coconut oil or 1 tablespoon of sunflower lecithin powder
- ¼ cup of milk
- 1-2 teaspoons of turmeric powder
- Pinch of black pepper powder
Method:
Place the coconut oil, ¼ c of milk, turmeric and black pepper in a pan and slowly bring to a simmer. Simmer for 5-10 minutes for the flavours to meld.
Turn off the heat and add your honey and fermented milk kefir. One does not want the milk kefir to be exposed to heats of more than 38℃.
Additional spices that one can incorporate: ginger, cardamom and vanilla.
Both turmeric and black pepper have shown to have active ingredients that contribute to being anti-inflammatory and disease fighting.
The key compounds in turmeric are called curcuminoids. Unfortunately, curcumin is not very well absorbed by the body. However, black pepper contains a compound called piperine which seems to boost the absorption of curcumin, hence the reason for combining these two ingredients. Curcumin and piperine have been shown to improve one's health due to their anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and disease fighting qualities.
