Ginger Beer Plant Culture
What is ginger beer culture/plant?
The ginger beer plant (GBP) is a symbiotic culture of bacteria and yeast. Although a similar concept to water kefir; GBP grains are smaller, slower growing, and have a sandy-grain-like appearance, unlike kefir grains which are larger and rapidly growing.
The ginger beer plant dates to the 1800s and it’s thanks to The German Collection of Microorganisms and Cell Cultures Bank which was one of the few places that preserved these grains of antiquity before they became completely extinct.
Unfortunately, some sellers advertise ginger beer plants for sale when in fact these cultures are not genuine and are simply “ginger bugs” or hybrids from kefir grains.
How do I make ginger beer?
You are supplied with 1 tablespoon of ginger beer culture which is enough to ferment 1-2L of ginger beer. All you need is sugar, unchlorinated water, ginger root, powder or juice, and your ginger beer culture. Dissolve your sugar in water, add ginger and then add your culture. Leave for a few days for it to ferment. You can then drain off your fermented ginger beer while reserving the culture for the next brew. Bottle your ginger beer for additional carbonation (this is called 2nd stage fermentation).
What is included in my purchase?
- 1 tablespoon ginger beer grains and starter liquid
- Recipe, instructions, and aftersales support
With the correct care, your GBP will continue to grow over time, and you can make larger batches of ginger beer.
****NOTE:
- Please use an urban address where possible.
- Live cultures are couriered out on Mondays & Tuesdays to avoid delays.
Here at Symbiota we pride ourselves on customer care and provide ongoing support so that everyone can enjoy their fermenting journey feeling supported and confident.
