The number of bacteria in your intestines can be estimated to be in their trillions. You don’t have to be grossed out as most of them are considered good bacteria and are tasked with keeping you healthy.

On another note, you can consider them as pets that are living inside your body. However, just like your regular pets at home, they need to be fed regularly.

According to research, consuming processed foods can cause an unbalance in the gut microbiota of a person. This can cause several gastrointestinal problems for that individual.

As luck would have it, fermented food can correct this. By adding fermented foods like pickles, and sauerkraut into your daily diet, you can have optimal health.

Here are some of the health benefits of fermented foods.

With good bacteria in your system, they can aid in the breakdown of complex carbohydrates found in the food you eat. The metabolizing and fermenting process leads to other things that can significantly benefit your body.

There is every chance you always swallow pathogenic bacteria – often the disease causing types. Sometimes, it doesn’t make you fall sick because some good bacteria helps you fight it.

They create acidic by-products of fermentation that lowers the pH of your intestines. This reduces the possibility of the harmful bacteria’s survival.

Remember to thank the good bacteria in your body for producing or synthesizing several vitamins needed by your body. Some of those vitamins are B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, B12, and lastly vitamin K.

The minute bacteria lodged in your intestine have effects on your body. According to research, when a person has gut microbiota that’s not diverse enough, they are likely to have chronic illnesses like asthma and obesity. They are also at risk of conditions like inflammatory bowel disease.
