What to Look for in a Real Probiotic Drink

by Amber Fairweather |

Are all "Probiotics Drinks" Made the Same?

In today’s wellness-driven world, probiotic drinks have surged in popularity. These drinks are rich in beneficial bacteria that support gut health, digestion, immunity, and even mood. But with so many products on the market, from kombucha to kefir to probiotic sodas, it can be hard to know what’s truly beneficial and what’s just clever marketing.

If you're shopping for a real probiotic drink in NZ, here’s what to look for to make sure you're getting live, active cultures that can genuinely support your health — not just a sugary fizz in disguise.

1. It Contains Living and Active Cultures

The hallmark of any real probiotic drink is the presence of live microorganisms. These are the “good” bacteria — typically Lactobacillus, Bifidobacterium, or wild strains found in fermented foods — that offer the benefits you’re after.

Look for:

  • Labels that say “live and active cultures” or “contains probiotics

  • Signs of natural fermentation (e.g. slight sediment, tartness, or fizz)

  • A short shelf-life or instructions to store refrigerated in order to preserve the living microbes)

  • If your drink has living probiotics, one way to test is is still alive is to leave it at room temperature for 7-14 days. The living microorganisms will get back to work and further ferment your drink, resulting in a less sweet and more tangy drink. This is a key indicator to a living probiotic drink!

🚩Many shelf-stable drinks don’t deliver the benefits you expect.

2. It’s Naturally Fermented — Not Just Supplemented

There are two main ways drinks get their probiotics:

  1. Through natural fermentation (like kombucha, kefir, or traditionally fermented kimchi or sauerkraut juice)

  2. By adding powdered laboratory created or isolated probiotics into a non-fermented drink

While both can be beneficial, naturally fermented drinks offer a wider range of microbial strains and other co-benefits — such as organic acids, metabolite, B-vitamins, minerals and enzymes — that come from the full fermentation process. Some research suggests that real fermented kefir may have up to 60 different strains if probiotic bacteria!

Naturally fermented drinks support diverse gut flora that the human gut has known for millennia, not just one or two isolated laboratory-grown strains. This diversity helps build resilience in your microbiome — which is especially important when dealing with modern stress, antibiotics, or poor diet.

3. Low Sugar, No Nasties

Many mass-market “probiotic” drinks are loaded with added sugar, artificial sweeteners, flavours, and preservatives — which can work against the very benefits you’re trying to get. Artificial sweeteners have shown to disrupt gut health.

🧃 Choose drinks that:

  • Have less than 5g of sugar per 100ml

  • Use raw, natural ingredients

  • Contain no preservatives (these can inhibit microbial life

  • Are unpasteurised, where safe and applicable

Real probiotic drinks shouldn’t need synthetic additives to taste good.

4. Bottled with Purpose — Not Just Trend

In New Zealand’s health food scene, probiotic drinks have become trendy. But a real probiotic product is made with intention, not just market appeal.

A genuine product will:

  • Support your body, not overstimulate or over-sweeten

  • Be made by people who understand fermentation

  • Often come in glass bottles to preserve integrity (and reduce microplastics)

  • Align with sustainable, ethical practices — such as rescuing produce or supporting regenerative agriculture

NOTE: Aluminum cans are generally safe, but regular use may pose health concerns. Acidic drinks can degrade the can’s plastic liner, potentially leading to aluminum or chemical leaching.

Probiotic drinks rooted in traditional fermentation wisdom have been around since the beginning of time, and working in symbiosis with the human body.

Probiotic Drinks That Do Good (And Feel Good)

Your gut health is too important to leave in the hands of mass-market trends. A real probiotic drink should be alive, made with integrity, and crafted to support your wellbeing, not just taste good or fit a label.

So the next time you're scanning the shelves at your local organic store or browsing online for probiotic drinks in NZ, remember:

  • Check for live cultures
  • Check that is is not made from concentrate
  • Look for natural fermentation
  • Read your labels
  • Choose local, clean, and ethical

And “Go With Your Gut” ™  — literally!
