Make Your Own Almond Milk

by Amber Fairweather |

Almond milk is a plant-based milk made by blending almonds with water and then straining the mixture through a nut milk bag to remove the solids. The result is a smooth, lightly nutty liquid that is commonly used as a dairy-free alternative to cow’s milk.

It’s naturally lactose-free and suitable for vegan diets, making it a popular choice for people who are dairy-intolerant or looking for a plant-based milk option. Almond milk can be used in coffee, smoothies, cereal, baking, or enjoyed on its own.

Store-bought almond milk often contains added ingredients like stabilisers or sweeteners, whereas homemade almond milk typically contains just almonds and water, resulting in a fresher, cleaner taste.

Why you should make your own almond milk at home

Making your own almond milk at home is a simple upgrade that offers noticeable benefits in quality, cost, and control over ingredients. One of the main reasons people choose homemade almond milk is to avoid the additives commonly found in store-bought versions. Many packaged almond milks contain gums, stabilisers, preservatives, and added sugars to extend shelf life and improve texture. When you make almond milk yourself, you can keep it as clean as you like.

Another major advantage is taste and texture. Fresh almond milk has a rich, creamy consistency and a subtle nutty flavour that is often diluted in commercial products. You can also customise it to your preference by adjusting the water ratio for thickness or adding ingredients like dates, vanilla, or a pinch of salt.

Cost is another important factor. Store-bought plant milks can be expensive, especially if you use them regularly. Making your own significantly reduces the cost per litre, particularly when buying nuts in bulk.

There’s also a sustainability benefit. By making almond milk at home, you reduce reliance on cartons and packaging, and you can reuse leftover almond pulp in recipes like baking or smoothies, creating a more zero-waste kitchen.

Finally, the process itself is incredibly simple. With a blender and a good nut milk bag, you can make fresh almond milk in minutes. It’s an easy habit to incorporate into your routine and gives you full control over what you’re consuming — making it a healthier, more sustainable, and more enjoyable alternative to store-bought options.

Using nut bags for making milk

Using a 70 micron Symbiota nut milk bag makes a noticeable difference because it strikes the perfect balance between filtration and flow. The fine 70 micron mesh is tight enough to remove even very small pulp particles, resulting in a smooth, silky almond milk with a clean finish and no graininess. At the same time, it still allows liquid to pass through efficiently, so you’re not left squeezing endlessly or dealing with slow draining. This means better extraction, higher yield, and less waste. A bag that is too coarse lets pulp through, while one that is too fine can clog and become frustrating to use. The 70 micron design avoids both problems, making the process faster and more consistent. The seam is double stitched to make cleaning easier. Combined with durable stitching and reusable material, it turns homemade nut milk into a simple, reliable routine with professional-quality results every time.
