Creatine supplements have spent way, way too long in the gym and in the shaker bottles of the bro’s pumping iron. In reality, creatine is a compound that your body naturally makes and uses. It is quite the powerhouse of goodness for all ages, genders and fitness inclinations! It is well past the time for creatine to get out of the gym, and into everybody’s lives. 

Let’s get out of the gym bro.

Creatine powders are well known in huge, plastic supplement tubs, taken by gym buffs to specifically target training, strength and exercise performance. But the basic science of understanding the different forms of creatine is relevant to everyone, and everybody. It turns out that creatine is a key player in wellbeing in more ways than just a gym pre-workout creatine supplementation regime. 

What is creatine, exactly?

Let’s dive straight into the essential definition of creatine and its different forms, without going so far as textbook science. The key definitions of creatine are quite succinct and easy to understand:

  • Creatine is a natural product, made in every single animal body.
  • The body works with the liver and kidneys to form creatine from amino acids.
  • Creatine is mostly stored in skeletal muscle, ready to provide energy as needed.

How does creatine help produce energy?

Let’s use an analogy to keep it simple.

Do I need a creatine loading phase?

A creatine loading phase might be something that pops up a lot in online searches. It refers to a method of taking a larger amount of creatine every day for a defined period, before settling into a more common daily amount. 

The “creatine loading phase” is a term commonly used by athletes or people beginning a training block who want to raise their creatine stores very quickly, rather than waiting for them to build gradually over time. This is usually an option for people who are preparing for a competition or a specific high-intensity event.

There are common side effects of completing a creatine loading phase, and not everyone will be keen to sign up. Side effects that are most often felt are headaches, water-weight gain, stomach bloating, and digestive discomfort.

And the loading phase doesn’t make creatine any more effective in the long run – it simply accelerates the process of reaching fuller muscle stores. A steady daily dose of creatine will achieve the same end point for your muscle stores gradually (and more gently on your digestive system).

More isn’t always better. A creatine loading phase is only useful if you’re planning on completing a triathlon or throwing yourself into the next mud run challenge at the last minute!

When should I take creatine: pre workout or post workout?

This is where it’s great to pair creatine every day with an existing habit – add to your morning coffee, workout smoothie, or into your daily water bottle. 

Are there side effects to worry about with taking creatine?

All bodies are different and may react to foods and supplements differently for a very wide range of reasons. There is no one supplement that suits every person. There are side effects that have been well documented in people sensitive to creatine, including:

  • Stomach upsets
  • Bloating
  • Increased water retention/water weight
  • Diarrhoea
  • Nausea
